Last week we wrote a blog about being “homeless”.
To our surprise, it was met with a bit of scrutiny to the point of someone calling us “entitled” and saying, based on our blog article, they “would never buy our product”.
We gotta be honest... getting an email like that from someone who doesn’t know us and has no idea the road we’ve travelled for the past 3 years took us completely off guard.
We do first need to stop right here and say... this person was right.
We are not “homeless” in the way the Oxford Dictionary defines homeless.
Being truly homeless is something altogether different and hard.
We are without a place that's ours to call home.
We are going from one short-term rental to another with our 2 pups, with the remainder of our earthly possessions in 4 different places.
We are genuinely sorry for choosing the wrong word, and have since changed our title to “Well, It's Official... We're Nomads”.
Unfortunately, our blog went out to tens of thousands of subscribers before we had the opportunity to correct our mistake so if there is anyone else we offended, we sincerely apologize.
When we started this blog 9 weeks ago, we said we wanted to speak from the heart.
We wanted to journal this journey for our own sake, but also to invite others in to come along with us on the road we’re traveling.
Because they say that happiness is only real when shared, right?!? :)
So, in that vein, we also want to point out something else.
This issue goes deeper for us than just receiving an email highlighting we made a mistake.
We understand that this person probably has no idea what goes into creating a product, and what it takes to actually get that product to market.
And, honestly, maybe they don’t care.
But our question is… why, too often, do we find it so much easier to tear people down rather than build them up?
Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn't it?
President Theodore Roosevelt said it best in one of our favorite quotes,
“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly.”
To be sure.... We err. We fall short... again and again.
We also strive hard.
We want to build a company with really cool, innovative, quality products.
But OME Gear, to us, is so much more than that.
It’s a platform for us and our team to make a positive impact on this world.
To be kind.
To invest in the good of others.
To admit when we’ve made a mistake.
To constantly be learning and growing.
To love and give the benefit of the doubt first, and to ask questions later.
So that is what we will be about.
That’s our mission.
And we hope you’ll join us in spreading the love.
Our world needs more of that.
